Circuit Breaker Configurations

Vacuum Circuit Breakers

Vacuum interrupters provide reliable switching and interruption for medium-voltage applications. Typical voltage range: 4.16kV to 15kV. Advantages include long mechanical life, low maintenance requirements, and suitability for frequent switching operations. Available in drawout or fixed-mounted configurations.

SF6 Circuit Breakers

SF6 gas-insulated breakers are used for higher voltage classes (15kV to 38kV) and applications requiring compact switchgear dimensions. SF6 breakers provide excellent arc-quenching performance and are suitable for utility and industrial applications where space is limited.

Drawout vs. Fixed-Mounted

Drawout breakers can be removed from the switchgear cell without disconnecting primary conductors, enabling faster maintenance and replacement. Fixed-mounted breakers are bolted directly to the cell structure, providing a more compact design for applications where breaker removal is infrequent.

Protection Relays

We integrate microprocessor-based protection relays for overcurrent, ground fault, differential, and distance protection. Relay panels are built to UL 508A standards and can include SCADA integration for remote monitoring and control.

Engineering & Customization

Our engineering workflow for every UL 1558 switchgear project:

01

SLD Review

We review your single-line diagram and identify voltage class, breaker types, and protection requirements.

02

Equipment Schedule Review

We cross-check the equipment schedule against the SLD to confirm ratings, accessories, and relay requirements.

03

Electrical Design

We produce detailed electrical drawings showing bus arrangements, breaker coordination, and relay logic.

04

Panel Layout

We design the physical layout showing cell dimensions, cable entry locations, and access requirements.

05

Component Selection

We select circuit breakers, relays, and instrumentation based on project specifications and availability.

06

Short-Circuit Evaluation

We calculate short-circuit currents and verify that all equipment ratings meet or exceed project requirements.

07

Submittal Package

We prepare GA drawings, electrical schematics, and specification sheets for your approval before production.

08

Production & Testing

After submittal approval, we fabricate the switchgear and perform factory acceptance testing.

Manufacturing Capabilities

Sheet Metal Fabrication

In-house sheet metal fabrication using CNC punching, laser cutting, and press braking. Enclosures are constructed from 11-gauge (3.0mm) cold-rolled steel with welded seams for structural rigidity. All welding is performed by certified welders.

Busbar Processing

CNC busbar processing equipment for cutting, punching, and bending copper or aluminum busbars. Busbars are electroplated or tin-plated for corrosion resistance and low-contact-resistance connections.

Assembly & Wiring

Skilled technicians assemble switchgear cells, install circuit breakers, route secondary wiring, and terminate control circuits. All wiring follows project-specific schematics and NEC requirements.

Inspection & Testing

Every switchgear assembly undergoes comprehensive factory acceptance testing (FAT) before shipment:

  • Insulation resistance testing (megger)
  • Contact resistance measurement on all bolted connections
  • Circuit breaker timing and travel analysis
  • Relay injection testing for protection verification
  • Mechanical operation of all interlocks and mechanisms
  • Visual inspection against approved submittal drawings

Test reports are included in the shipment documentation package. All testing is performed in-house as part of our quality control process.

Standards & Certification

UL 1558 metal-clad switchgear is designed and manufactured in accordance with the following standards:

  • UL 1558 — Standard for Metal-Clad Switchgear
  • IEEE C37.207 — Standard for Metal-Clad Switchgear
  • IEEE C37.04 — Standard for Ratings and Related Capabilities of AC High-Voltage Circuit Breakers
  • IEEE C37.09 — Standard for Test Procedures for AC High-Voltage Circuit Breakers
  • NEC (NFPA 70) — National Electrical Code
  • NEMA SG-5 — Power Switchgear Assemblies

Important: Our switchgear is designed to meet UL 1558 requirements. Third-party certification (UL Listing, field evaluation, or type testing) is arranged on a project-specific basis depending on the application, local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements, and customer specifications. We do not claim blanket UL Listing for all switchgear — certification scope is confirmed per project.

We also hold ISO 9001 certification for our quality management system, ensuring consistent manufacturing processes and documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between UL 1558 switchgear and UL 891 switchboard?
UL 1558 covers metal-clad switchgear for medium-voltage applications (typically 1kV to 38kV), using power circuit breakers per IEEE C37 standards. UL 891 covers low-voltage switchboards up to 600V, using molded case or insulated case circuit breakers per NEC Article 408. The two serve different voltage classes and application requirements.
What voltage classes do you support for UL 1558 switchgear?
We design and build UL 1558 metal-clad switchgear for voltage classes from 1kV to 38kV, including 4.16kV, 13.8kV, and 34.5kV systems commonly used in North American industrial and utility applications. Specific voltage ratings are determined by project requirements.
Can you review our single-line diagram before we place an order?
Yes. Send us your SLD and equipment schedule, and our engineering team will provide a technical review and quotation within 24 hours. There is no charge for SLD review or preliminary engineering.
What type of circuit breakers do you use in UL 1558 switchgear?
We use vacuum or SF6 circuit breakers in drawout or fixed-mounted configurations. Breaker selection depends on the project voltage class, short-circuit duty, and application requirements. We work with major breaker manufacturers and can accommodate project-specified brands.
Do you provide NEMA 3R outdoor switchgear?
Yes. We supply both NEMA 1 (indoor) and NEMA 3R (outdoor) enclosures. NEMA 3R enclosures include rainproof construction, drip shields, and conduit hubs for exterior installations.
What standards govern UL 1558 switchgear?
UL 1558 metal-clad switchgear is designed and tested in accordance with IEEE C37.207 (for metal-clad switchgear) and IEEE C37.04-C37.09 (for circuit breaker ratings and testing). The switchgear meets NEC requirements for medium-voltage installations.
What is the typical lead time for UL 1558 switchgear?
Lead time depends on the switchgear complexity, voltage class, and order quantity. Standard configurations ship within 8–12 weeks after submittal approval. Complex or high-voltage units may require 12–16 weeks.
Do you provide relay protection and control panels?
Yes. We supply complete protection and control systems including overcurrent relays, differential protection, ground fault protection, and SCADA integration. Relay panels are built to UL 508A standards.
